The Calming Effect of Walking Outside

This past weekend I took a quick trip to Seattle (flew in Thursday night, flew out Saturday around noon) and while I didn’t have enough time to fully appreciate all the city has to offer, I was able to find a park near my hotel to wander around in Saturday morning before my flight took off.

As I walked around, I was entranced with how lush and green everything was here! I felt a sense of calm immediately wash over me.  These pictures really don’t do the scene justice.

I realized how much of an impact just a few minutes out in nature can really have on mood. I spent probably 45 minutes total walking around and it felt like WAY longer.  Walking outside for even just 10 minutes can have a calming effect and really make you appreciate how beautiful the outside world is.  This is so important since we live in an age where we are often inside, on our computers, and sitting under artificial light.

So the next time you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, just take a 10 minute walk outside and I promise you’ll feel better!

Do you take any “get outside” breaks during the workday?

  1. One of my resolutions for 2016 is to go on 2 big hikes per month. I’ve been successful so far this year and we’re going on a big vday hike on Sunday 🙂

ps- I found your blog via the getmorewebinar spreadsheet from last night and was super excited to see a few other Nashville bloggers!
