Hot Yoga on a Cold Day

yoga-mats-1620086As part of my 16 in 2016, I set out to do yoga twice a month.  I went twice in January and hit up my first February class on Saturday at Sumits Yoga. I hadn’t heard of this studio, but discovered it thanks to Classpass.  I had somewhere to be at 11:30 and this class fit in perfectly with my schedule–it was at 9am, so I wasn’t up at the crack of dawn, and was able to shower, eat some of my sweet potato egg bake, and get ready before heading out the door.

On a chilly winter day, hot yoga is the PERFECT way to warm up.  I really enjoyed this studio and class.  If power/vinyasa and bikram had a baby, it would be this 60 minute class.

Book Review: The Longevity Project

longevity projectAs part of my 16 in 2016 I made it a goal to read 5 nonfiction books this year.  I can happily say I’ve already finished one!  I picked up The Longevity Project by Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin because the blurb on the front cover caught my eye–“Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight-Decade Study.” How fascinating!

Basically, this guy named Dr. Terman asked teachers in a region of California to give him the names of students who appeared to be gifted.  The kids were around 8, I believe, and Dr. Terman ended up surveying the parents and children over time to discover what traits led to a long healthy life.  There were about 1500 participants and Dr. Terman died during the course of the study, but luckily some other researchers kept it going!

The Calming Effect of Walking Outside

This past weekend I took a quick trip to Seattle (flew in Thursday night, flew out Saturday around noon) and while I didn’t have enough time to fully appreciate all the city has to offer, I was able to find a park near my hotel to wander around in Saturday morning before my flight took off.

As I walked around, I was entranced with how lush and green everything was here! I felt a sense of calm immediately wash over me.  These pictures really don’t do the scene justice.

Day 10: 10 Day Detox Diet

See Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8, Day 9, and why I’m doing this.

Last day! I woke up STILL not feeling well.  It’s really annoying to have a constant headache and sore mouth. I headed to the gym for a 30 minute elliptical ride and it felt good to do some cardio again! I’d been in the car a lot the past couple of days and my legs needed some movement! Especially before my 5 hour flight tonight. Side note: my skin has slightly improved from yesterday.
